According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the company is no longer trying to get fans to stop booing Reigns - they're simply trying to spin why fans are booing him. With Reigns being positioned as Cena's successor not only in terms of his wrestling spot, but his charity work as well, WWE is trying to portray Reigns as someone whom the fans really like, but they enjoy booing. In essence, booing Reigns is something that leads to a fun atmosphere at shows, it isn't personal.
Needless to say, this doesn't accurately portray how the vast majority of fans feel about the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Many consider Reigns ill-suited for his role as top babyface, and simultaneously undermined by a company that's inadvertently exposing his weakness.
Nevertheless, this "John Cena explanation" - that fans only boo Reigns because it's fun - is the latest attempt to make the champ look good.
